There is a saying that love goes through stomach. I can absolutely confess that I did let my heart skip a beat or two each time I ate great food. I’m thankful for being able to explore different cuisines and restaurants in the past and esp. throughout the last year. I could have never believed that I could fall for some food so much that I just had to keep on coming back over and over again for more. 🙂
Give the girl right pair of shoes and she’ll rule the world, but feed the girl right food and she’ll be yours forever. That’s what happens at restaurant Yume, every single time with all of their dishes! I still don’t know how they do it, but menu change after menu change and yet, every single dish is done wonderfully, with a big love and attention put into preparing and serving it.
I’ve been previously writing about Yume here and here and in the meanwhile, I’ve developed a real romantic relationship with that restaurant. It’s my “happy place”! It’s service is skilled to the max and always ready to meet any of your wishes and requirements. Kitchen staff is sharp as a Swiss watch and you never have to wait for your dishes long, no matter how busy the night at the restaurant might be.
I’m not sure if this is all thanks to it being tied to the best hotel in Scandinavia, a 5 star Kämp hotel or not, but Yume is a must visit at least every once in a while. It’s like pampering yourself, instead of a massage and relaxing music, you’ll be eating the best of food, enjoying a royalty like attention and drinking some good sake or cocktail.
As of past week, Yume started to pair the dishes from the current menu with their extensive cocktails list. To do things properly and just like previous two times, we chose to drink both, sake was Hakutsuru Junmai Ginjo and cocktails were Tom Collins and Pomegranate – mint.
Starting point of our dinner was a sushi platter with two new rolls, prawn roll with mango, surimi, cucumber and yuzu honey mayo. Other roll is crispy salmon roll with fried salmon, daikon, horseradish and tempura flakes. I have never tried better tasting or more interesting rolls anywhere else in Helsinki and very rarely anywhere else on my travels either. Katsuya, Katana and Nobu are the only places which I could consider a competition ( from the places I’ve been to ). Sushi is something I’m very passionate about and I have a huge respect in whole sushi tradition and knowledge one needs to have in order to make the right sushi roll and nigiri. Yume’s Japanese chef never fails… Helsinki has many sushi places, some even very traditional to Japanese home cooking ( like Kabuki ) but nobody comes close to Yume. Amen!
Salmon and tuna nigiris are done perfectly, such simple bites but full of flavour and I could munch on them the whole day without getting bored by the taste. 🙂
New menu, I’d say, is the most exciting one so far! List is pretty extended and not a single dish is less of a “rock star” than the other. It’s always hard choosing main courses, but we did managed to set our hearts on King Crab legs and duck.
The only place in which I ate the most delicious King crab legs was Katana in LA and upon tasting Yume’s dish, I was equally blown away. Tender, fresh and dense crab meat dipped into Korean bbq sauce ( kimchi taste like ) was all I needed on my plate. No extra rice, salad, whatsoever, just the meat and sauce were perfect match together.
Duck was very interesting and even “fun” to eat! It came with some cucumber slices, hoisin sauce and crispy rice pancakes. The point is to assembly your own pancake, roll it and enjoy it shamelessly. 🙂 Tender meat, perfect sauce and softness of pancakes was trio “magnifique”! Highly recommended dish! I can also suggest you to try Yume’s kimchi and edamame as sides to the main courses or as snacks on their own.
For dessert, we got a special treat that made me even come up with my own phrase of dining at Yume – YUMETIZING! 😀 Yes, I get childish when it comes to food, I’m a big foodie and can’t help it. Banana cake with mango sorbet and caramel sauce, cream cheese mousse with strawberries and meringue or selection of daily ice cream/ sorbets – no matter what you order as your dessert, you’ll love it and even the biggest of sweetest tooths ever will be satisfied. 🙂
Now hurry to make your reservation at Yume because there’s no excuse not to enjoy your Summer holidays on the hottest terrace in the city and enjoy your sushi outdoors or get all private and romantic indoors with a shared dessert platter perhaps. Choices are big and hedonist like at Yume, so get your seat reserved, they go really fast at such unique spot as Yume is.
